TURF MANAGEMENT

The KEYS to STRONG, HEALTHY TURF

  • Start with soil testing
  • Then fertilize and/or lime accordingly
  • Use a quality seed
  • Cut frequently with a sharp blade
  • Adopt a program of aerification and overseeding

Why should I aerify?

  • Compaction and stress are the number one cause of patchy or uneven turf
  • A human foot transfers more pressure than a D-8 Dozer
  • Your turf heeds to breathe so that air and water can get to the root system.

How often?

  • As often as possible

Four methods for aerifying

  1. Solid tine and slit effects the upper 2 to 3 inches by poking or slicing an air pocket into the soil and upper root zone. Compaction is alieviated and air and water is introduced. Effects are short-term and subsoils remain unaffected.
  2. Core tine effects the upper 2 to 3 inches by punching and removing a core of soil. Long-term effects can be expected but subsoil is unaffected.
  3. Solid vibratory tine effects the upper 3 to 5 inches and fractures the upper soils. Long-term effects can be expected but subsoil remains unaffected.
  4. Deep tine and drilling effects 7 to 12 inces. Indroduces air and water to the entire growing profile and gractures deep hard pan soils. Improves drainage and has long term results.
